Guest Speaker 2019 – Hon. Douglas R. Orane, CD, JP

The Hon. Douglas Orane, CD, JP, (LLD,Hon) is a well-established, well-known Jamaican businessman with a passion for service, a belief in good corporate governance being the key to strengthening all institutions, and is a most avid Jamaican sports spectator, especially at the international level.

Many know that he was Chief Executive Officer and then Chairman of GraceKennedy for more than half of the over 32 years working with the company. However, many do not know that he is Chairman of Greenfield Media Productions Company Ltd, a joint venture formed in 2015 by Inter Secondary Schools’ Sports Association, ISSA, and GraceKennedy, to develop a holistic business approach to managing the intellectual property rights of high school sports that fall under ISSA’s purview, including the world renowned Boys’ and Girls’ Championships. This initiative has significantly increased the earnings for ISSA, allowing for greater resources to invest in school sports across Jamaica.

Still, others do not know that this industrial engineer by training who attended the University of Glasglow in Scotland and Harvard Business School in the United States of America, has been among the fanatical cheering party for Jamaicans at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, present on Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence at the London Olympics in 2012, and again at the Rio Olympics in Brazil in 2016.

The great Jamaican committment continues for Douglas with his fellow sports enthusiast, his wife Michele, who is always with him at these events, as they have also been to four World Athletics Championships, the 2014 Commonwealth Games in his former university city of Glasglow and the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

A Wolmerian who is a Trustee of Wolmer’s Schools, he is highly regarded for giving back to the community, and guided GraceKennedy’s programme for inner city residents, from which many of our athletes emerge to lift our country onto the world stage.

we are proud to have as guest speaker at the 59th Annual RJRGLEANER Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards, the Hon. Douglas Orane.
